1 Corinthians 10:23

I was looking through my old "renewing of the mind project journal for eating" last night and this entry made me laugh:

6/11/08

Belief: I forgot to put whip cream on my first bowl of ice cream so it's okay to have a second bowl with whipped cream.

Truth: It may be permissible, but it does not edify!!!

All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify. 1 Corinthians 10:23

I've been thinking of the idea of all things being lawful but not all things edifying. I've been thinking of it in terms of giving glory to God. We're told whether we eat or drink to give glory to God. So instead of focusing on freedom and license as a way to make us happy, what if we focused on our freedom as a way to bring glory to God? Resisting sin glorifies him. And so does properly claiming our freedom.

Huge difference between freedom and edifying. Great, but simple point.

LOL!!!! That's a great one. :-) Love your project of working on the thinking that drives bad behaviors. It's my project for the year!

Loren, I like that idea of using our freedom as a way to bring glory to God - and the interesting thing is that that's our best chance for happiness anyway. When I'm in "indulge and glorify me" mode, I never get enough to satisfy.

Seth, yes, that would be interesting to think about some more - the difference between freedom and edifying.

Melanie, I like your project!
